REVIEW: HUMAN TOWN

A family of elephants goes to a zoo to visit the wildlife before it goes extinct. The kids are excited. The parents are eager to share their love of adventure with the children. Sounds perfectly normal right? What is normal?

In this picture book, normal is a tale where humans are zoo animals and elephants get to view humans while they engage in everyday activities like shopping, playing and going to school. There is a catch, however, the elephants observe how humans are slowly becoming an endangered species (lessons on consumerism and environmentalism abound).

A solid book for classroom use, with the right emphasis can be used for lively discussion and debate. I would use it starting at age seven or higher (perhaps even through Middle School) as the subject matter is heavy and is handled deftly and without sugar coating.
