Read a snippet of Nicolette Jones’ wonderful review below.
This picturebook is the story of a flower that blooms when it is spoken to kindly by a little girl, and droops when it is hectored by the self-important man who owns it — a metaphor for how we should treat each other if we are all to flourish. It is also about how the man blooms when he finds love in his heart. Illustrated with scratchy cross-hatching and bright figures, it shows scenes of school and home and the route between the two, contrasting the interior of a flat on an estate — filled with colour, creativity and warmth — with the chilly rooms of a grander detached house.
