One little fish has been loved through generations in Iran, by grandfathers and grandmothers, children, and grandchildren. This year that special fish turned 50, and the momentous occasion was celebrated with a fantastic puppet performance, birthday party, and (lots of) cake. All of this happened at Hay Book Festival.

Hereford College of Arts and The Fetch Theatre teamed up to bring The Little Black Fish to life, allowing a new generation of children to experience the magic of the little black fish’s brave journey. Watch the video of the performance below:

The Little Black Fish tells the story of a brave fish who dares to swim against the tide: he wants to leave his little pond and go out into the big wide ocean. Often seen as a dangerous political allegory, The Little Black Fish was banned in pre-revolutionary Iran.
