Tiny Owl flew to Edinburgh International Book Festival last week, where we had events for three of our wonderful books! Cinderella of the Nile and Thinker: My Puppy Poet and Me had fab author and illustrator led events, as well as a Big Draw with the illustrators! Our newest wordless picture book Caged celebrated its launch at the festival itself! There were multiple events for each book, for schools as well as parents and children! Check out the photos and videos from the fantastic events below! Just click the photos to enlarge them!

Cinderella of The Nile

We started of with a fantastic event for the first in our One Story Many Voices series, Cinderella of The Nile. It was an incredibly touching moment when author Beverley Naidoo and illustrator Marjan Vafaeian finally met, having completed this brilliant book without ever seeing each other in person! It was wonderful to have Marjan at Edinburgh Book Festival for her first visit, where she created live drawings for the story of Cinderella of The Nile as Beverley read. Marjan also had her very own Big Draw event, inspired by the figure of Horus the falcon-god, and creating other mystical half-human creatures!

Caged

The latest of our Wordless Picture Books, Caged took flight at the festival! We are so pleased to have launched this witty tale which shares an important message of freedom. This is creator Duncan Annand’s debut picture book, and his two events were brilliant! The children volunteered their own interpretations of this wordless picture book, and what they understood from the story. He also explained his style and how he created a wordless story for the audience!

Thinker: My Puppy Poet and Me

We also had fab events for our new poetry book, Thinker: My Puppy Poet and MeAward-winning author and poet Eloise Greenfield came all the way from America, as well as this year’s Edinburgh Book Festival illustrator in residence, Ehsan Abdollahi who visited from Iran! The two of them had a wonderful event for the book, sharing the inspiration behind it and how the figure of the puppy Thinker was brought to life! Ehsan also had a Big Draw event, creating a magnificent collage puppy! Eloise had her own event for adults as well, with Victoria Adukwei Bulley, looking more deeply at her work with poetry, as well as her life. Both Ehsan and Eloise shared valuable tips and advice to their young audience, encouraging to follow their passions and be creative. Ehsan gave the inspiring message:

Live as you wish. Follow what you love and have passion for what you do. Live what you love! You’ll enjoy most and never get tired.

A wonderful motto for future illustrators, but also for everyone!

Ehsan was also part of The Freedom Finale, the closing concert of the festival. He created a stunning and intricate piece of artwork that reflected the message of freedom, live on stage!

We had an incredible time at Edinburgh International Book Festival, and look forward to visiting again next summer! We’d like to say a big thank you to the team at the festival, who were all fantastic, and made our visit so wonderful!
