Buy There’s Room for Everyone
Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4
Genre: Picture book
What did you like about the book? This deceptively simple book provides a thought-provoking premise – “If we are kinder, and if we love each other, then in this beautiful world, there’s room for everyone.” A grown man reflects back on how his childhood world always had enough space, both physically and metaphorically, for everyone. Now that he’s older, and he has seen the struggles on our planet, he realizes that we need to work harder toward accepting everyone. The vibrant illustrations have a rustic quality with jewel tones and primitive shapes. The author, a Tehran native, explains her rationale for writing this book that serves as an allegory for the refugee crisis.
Anything you didn’t like about it? Although geared toward younger children, the theme may be too difficult for them to fully process. That said, older elementary and middle school students may appreciate the simplicity of the story as a launching point for deeper discussion.
To whom would you recommend this book? This would be a great addition to any social justice collection.
Who should buy this book? Public and school libraries
Where would you shelve it? Picture books
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Not unless you are looking to expand your collection with texts of this nature.
