The picture-book reworking of The Twelve Dancing Princesses is a celebration of love and living to the full. It also reminds us of the cost of each of the princesses’ frolicking nights: a duped suitor’s life. Morris’s poetic retelling of the fairy tale gives the handsome soldier who solves the riddle of the worn-out shoes a soulmate who is not involved in the demise of young men. Making this picture book lovely are the Iranian illustrator Abdollahi’s sumptuous patterns of finely drawn parallel lines and gilded collages. He shows us magical trees and dancers in billowing sleeves and designer footwear – a feast of high-heeled lace-ups and frilled boots.
