The wonderful Youth Services Book Review have recently shared a four star review of The Phoenix of Persia. Read what Lindsey Hughes had to say below.

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre: Adventure

What did you like about the book? This was a very interesting book that comes from an ancient text written in Iran. The neat thing you can do is take a QR code and listen to the story with music and instruments specifically written to go along with different characters. This allows for a deeper experience of both the story and the culture of origin. The story is about a Phoenix who takes in a baby, a prince, who was given away by his father the king. She raises him in her nest, and teaches him everything a royal would need to know. The illustrations can easily be described as lush. They are full of jewel tones and textures that once again evoke the culture and brings the story to life. There is an introduction to the story and its origins in the beginning of the book, and an explanation of the instruments used at the end of the book. This is great supplemental information for classroom use.

Anything you didn’t like about it? No

To whom would you recommend this book?  Excellent for multicultural studies or mythology. Would also work well, using the music component, to use along with Peter and the Wolf, for example, as a way music is used to portray a character.

Who should buy this book? Public library, elementary school, middle school

Where would you shelve it? Picture book or nonfiction

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
