Ken Wilson-Max

Ken Wilson-Max is the author of our latest picture book The Drum the first in our new Children.Music.Life series. Ken was born in Zimbabwe and now lives and works in London. He is the author and illustrator of several award-winning books. Read his interview below:

The Drum is the perfect book to move and dance to. What does music mean to you?

Music is so important. It helps me remember all my good and bad times. It’s also an incredible motivator.

Did you play any musical instruments when growing up?

No, surprisingly. My father managed a few bands in Harare so I was surrounded by it but never learned to play an instrument other than my voice. But I learned to ‘feel’ beats and rhythms early in life, which has meant being able to tune in to and enjoy any kind of music.

Why do you think music is so important to children and their development?

Music is another language for children to learn and use. It builds confidence, is challenging and rewarding to children so what’s not to like?

What about your new series, Children. Music. Life., are you most excited for?

The challenge of capturing the characteristics of each instrument, both in words and pictures. The opportunity to work with Catell Ronca and the Tiny Owl team is also high my list. We have chosen four old instruments, four foundational instruments that are important to cultures all over the world, so it will be exciting to see how each family can interpret them.

Why did you choose to start the series with The Drum?

I wanted to start with the instrument that is the foundation of all music, I guess. And I wanted to show it in the way that I, as an African, know it.

What do you think the new series will bring to children?

The series is designed to get children moving and thinking about music, rhythm and expressing themselves in any way they can!

What three words would you use to describe The Drum?

Play your drum!
