Slight delay of posting this due to daughter’s early 3rd birthday which was VERY last minute and the tidy up post bedtime! One of our #booksb4bedtime was #bloom by @anneboothauthor and Robyn Owen Wilson. This is such a lovely book. A little girl used to pass a beautiful flower every day on her way to school and every day she tells it how much she loves it and it grows strong. However, one day the owner overhears her and is cross and jealous and tells her no to go near is flower again. The flower starts to suffer and wither, despite the man watering it and giving it added special care and keeping it shaded and so he asks the little girl what he can do to make it grow again and she suggests doing as she did and telling it how much he loves it, and sure enough once again the flower starts to bloom. It is interesting as the older man blames the gardener and feels like he doesn't need any help and, in the end, has to seek her help, exhibiting how she is wiser than him despite his age. There is the issue of why people behave as they do and how words can cause someone to wilt, but words can also cause someone to bloom – this is such a significant element to the story, the power of words. It is of course beautifully illustrated with stunningly bright imagery that all makes it come to life.
