Happy book birthday to Quill Soup! We’re delighted to be able to share this vibrant animal tale that promotes kindness and sharing!
As you may know, today is World Refugee Day. We couldn’t think of a better day to publish a book that’s all about welcoming outsiders into your community. When Noko the porcupine arrives at the village, the other animals refuse to share their food with him despite having plenty of spare food to give. But when he starts cooking up a pot of ‘quill soup’ so tasty even the king likes it, they soon change their tune. With everyone contributing their own ingredients, they soon make a delicious pot of soup for everyone to share. The simple story, based on the European folk tale ‘stone soup’, reminds us that we’re all better off when we share what we have with others.
The traditional story is reinterpreted by British author Alan Durant and South African illustrator Dale Blankenaar as a colourful tale featuring all the wonderful animals of the African jungle. It’s a great chance for children to learn about rare creatures they might not have encountered before, like the aardvark, porcupine and pangolin.
