One of our #booksb4bedtime was #quillsoup by Alan Durant and Dale Blankenaar. This is a brilliant re-telling of ‘Stone Soup’. In this West African twist on the well known tale, Noko, a poor tired, hungry and lonely porcupine, who is alone in a remote jungle village and looking for rest and respite in a village of animals who instead are far too greedy to provide any help and are unfriendly and unwelcoming. Nico then needs to think about survival and being creative in getting the animals to help him, so he begins making quill soup – a delicious soup fit for a king, if only it had just one more ingredient. It is a story to really make you think. A folk story about the importance and impact of sharing and I liked this version of the tale as it shows the greedy animals learning to be less selfish and turning to generosity instead. The use of colour, illustrations and double page spreads are unique in their style and so striking and engaging. We have read this a few times since getting it and we are still finding new elements amongst the vines and subtle details, skilfully woven into the pictures. It’s fabulous! * * * #kidsbooks #childrensbooks #illustratedbooks #illustratedbook #kidsbook #picturebook #kidsbookswelove #kidsbookstagram #kidsbookreview #kidsbookreviews #childrensbookreview #bookpublicist #bookstagramcommunity #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #earlyliteracy #booksblog #booksblogger #earlyreading #booklovers #bookcommunity #bookstagramcommunity
