Tiny Owl’s Children & Poetry campaign continues

Pre-order Thinker: My Puppy Poet and Me

Poetry can have a profound and almost magical effect on people. One line of a poem can transport us to somewhere else entirely. Writing and reading poetry can help children develop empathy skills, aid literacy, and is fun! With the launch of our latest poetry book Thinker: My Puppy Poet and Me we have started a campaign to explore ways that we can encourage children to get involved with poetry. If you’re a parent, teacher or poetry lover then we hope that this campaign will help inspire you to bring amazing poetry to children.

We contacted children’s poets and experts and asked them:

How can we encourage children to discover and embrace poetry for themselves?

We have a fantastic response from James Carter

James Carter:

Children love poetry

Here’s a simple thing. It’s what a big, urban primary school five miles down my road does. And every day. And in every class. The teacher will read a poem to the children to start the day. Takes barely a minute, but the results are manifold. Literacy levels increase, vocabularies increase, and crucially, the children’s love for and ownership of language increases. It’s a little drip feed of the good stuff every single morning. Teachers could try variations of this. One week the children read their own poems. Another week children volunteer to read their favourite poems. And teachers could try a range of poems. One week it’s rhyming poems. Next week haikus. Next week poems about animals. Next week shape poems. Next week poems about space. Next week poems by Michael Rosen… The government wouldn’t suggest something as simple and effective as this, as it can’t be quantified or assessed so would probably seem utterly pointless to them. Children love poetry – writing, reading and performing it. Poetry is an absolute gift for primary teachers, and it’s there for the taking…
