We have been asking children’s writers, illustrators, lecturers and journalists:

‘Are picture books for children, or adults can enjoy them just as much?’

Below you will find more answers:

Eric Heyman:

Picture books have never been just for children

I’ve always read picture books and illustrated them. All good children’s book classics have been read and reread by adults for children. Parents have always read and interacted with children. That’s how I got interested in illustration. Picture books have never been just for children.

* Eric is a professional illustrator.

Robyn Ridley:

I still go back to picture books for inspiration

I honestly think picture books are for everyone. Each one usually has good message in its theme and anyone can learn from these. There are so many things a picture or illustration can say that words can’t. I’m 25 now and can still remember my favourite book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar‘ and I just thought it was brilliant. The colours, the textures and most importantly the story. Even now I still go back to picture books for inspiration, especially as an illustrator. But i think picture books should be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age.

* Robyn is an illustrator.

Picture books don’t shy away from difficult themes

Picture books don’t shy away from difficult themes. They embrace them. And at the heart of the very best picture books lie immortal messages about courage, friendship and wonder.
