An interview with Eloise Greenfield
Buy Thinker: My Puppy Poet and Me

Eloise Greenfield is the author of our latest poetry book Thinker: My Puppy Poet and Me. We talked to her about poetry, and Thinker. Read her response below:
Why do you think it is important for children to read poetry?
I think it is important for children to read all forms of good literature, in order to acquire knowledge, develop the ability to use and understand the power of words, and to experience the
intellectual and emotional richness of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, etc.
One of the styles you most often choose to write in is free verse. Can you tell us why you choose it?
Free verse allows me to capture the music I hear in spoken language. When I am writing, I hear the melodies and rhythms in my head, while thinking consciously about the meanings.
What tips would you give parents and teachers who want to encourage their children to get involved in poetry?
To get children involved with poetry, it helps to have them read (or recite) aloud with the adult, using the appropriate vocal expression and gestures; dramatize the poems; discuss the themes and the characters, asking the children’s opinions.

Why did you choose to make Thinker, a puppy, a poet?
Thinker is a poet because I thought it would be humorous and hold the interest of children.
What does the relationship between Thinker and Jace mean to you?
In creating the relationship between Thinker and Jace, I thought of the closeness of children with their pets. I thought of the humor in an animal who not only talks, but creates poems. I hoped children would hear what Jace and Thinker had to say and how they felt about poetry.
Do you have any plans for the future you can tell us about?

My plans for the future are not specific at this time, but to keep writing and finding joy in my work and, I hope, making a contribution to children.
