We are beyond delighted to announce that two of our illustrators have been nominated for the prestigious Kate Greenaway Children’s Book Awards!

Dale Blankenaar was nominated for Quill Soup, written by Alan Durant. Quill Soup is an African retelling, based on the traditional ‘stone soup’ fable. The bold, captivating illustrations are inspired by the wood sculpture of western Africa and the costumes and masks of the BWA people of Burkina Faso, together with Dale’s experimentation with primary colours. From South Africa, Dale has illustrated over 30 picture books and has won several international awards.

Amin Hassanzadeh Sharif was nominated for The Phoenix of Persia, written by Sally Pomme Clayton. To illustrate The Phoenix of Persia, Amin has used his distinctive sgraffito technique which involves scratching through a layer of still-wet paint to reveal what’s underneath producing wonderful highly detailed and richly textured scenes. Born in Tehran, Amin is an award-winning illustrator whose work has been published worldwide.

The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are the UK’s oldest and most prestigious children’s book awards. The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded by children’s librarians and it is the only prize in the UK to solely reward outstanding illustration in a children’s book. The awards previously chose Tiny Owl books as part of their selection of diverse titles that were eligible for the award. Last year three of our titles, Thinker: My Puppy Poet and Me, The Drum and Cinderella of the Nile, were nominated!

Here at Tiny Owl, we are all thrilled and very proud of our wonderful illustrators and authors! You can follow the awards on social media with the hashtag #CKG20.
