Mothers play such an important role in our everyday lives. They are caring, generous and supportive. They offer a hand to hold, or a shoulder to cry on. Mothers lend an ear to hear our words, and let us know when we are being stubborn or careless. They are forgiving, honest and patient. Sometimes mothers do things without even being asked, and sometimes we forget to show our appreciation in return. Mothers share stories, and words of wisdom — her influence guides us in the right direction.
In Tahmineh’s Beautiful Bird by Parviz Kalantari, Tahmineh, who is from the nomadic Qashghai tribespeople in Iran, spends quality time with her mother making bread. When Tahmineh asks her mother for advice about the bird with the beautiful singing voice, her mother replies, “Even if you can’t catch the bird, you can catch the memory.” Tahmineh becomes inspired by her mother’s words, and decides to memorialize the bird by weaving him into a beautiful chanteh (bag). Mothers always know exactly what to say to help us lead our best lives, just like Tahmineh’s mother does.
On Mother’s Day, mothers everywhere deserve to be recognized for everything they do.
