Today’s choice is: Felix After Rain by Dunja Jogan translated by Olivia Hellewell Why we love it: This Slovenian children’s book addresses the difficult subjects of grief, shame and anxiety. Felix is a sad boy; he carries every upset in his life around with him in a heavy suitcase. One day he is reminded of something his late grandma used to say, ‘the sun shines after a rain and that after every uphill climb there’s a downhill stroll’ which inspires him to climb up a big hill. At the top of the hill a little boy unexpectedly opens the suitcase and releases the turmoil inside! Felix’s tears start tumbling as the storm rages… however, the storm soon settles and so does Felix’s sorrow. He feels as light as a balloon again and feels like his can smile once more. A powerful, moving and important book. I have to admit, I try to avoid the subject of death with my 4 year old because I don’t want to make her sad. Books like this are so important in helping to talk about difficult feelings and demonstrate that even when you’re feeling your lowest, in time, things will get better once again. This book was kindly #gifted to me from @tiny_owl_publishing but the opinions are entirely my own. #felixaftertherain #booksaboutgrief #readforempathy #hopeinascaryworld
