National Poetry Day is here! Across the country, people of all ages are coming together to read, write and share poetry. It’s a wonderful time to celebrate literature and get people to express their creativity! The theme for this year is change.
As children’s publishers we hope that our poetry books will change people’s lives for the better. But how?
We believe that by encouraging children to read poetry for fun, we can make their lives fuller and happier. Poetry enriches us, makes us see the world differently, increases empathy and understanding. It shows us that others, some tens or hundreds of years ago, have had the same feelings and experiences as us and put them into words.

Through poetry, we can give children a sense of hope despite the scary world they’re inheriting from us. It offers them the best guide for how to live thoughtfully and compassionately. When I Coloured in the World shows children that despite what they’re told, they do have the power to make a positive change in the world. Poetry teaches us that we can all make a difference, no matter how small!

Many children grow up believing that poetry isn’t for them. We want to change this. Children should be able to see themselves reflected in the poetry they read, regardless of their background, gender, religion or ethnicity. Poetry can help us to develop a stronger sense of our own identities, and to better understand people who are different from us. Our book Thinker: My Puppy Poet and Me by Eloise Greenfield is a bold celebration of black family life and friendships. It uses many poetic forms including rhyming, free verse, haiku and rap, showing children that poetry can be anything you want it to be!

Poetry changes lives, inspires us with beauty, and it’s fun! It can be enjoyed by anyone from anywhere, whether you’re ten or a hundred and ten. So next time you’re looking to pick up a book, try poetry for a change!
