In December it will be part of an exhibition in the beautiful town of Kengkeng Hakka in Shenzhen, China, showcasing all the finalists’ books. Little Hakka will host a day-long forum entitled ‘Forests and Children’, in celebration of children’s picture books and the competition’s first year, before announcing the overall winner at an awards ceremony.
The award, which received nearly 1500 entries from over 40 countries, seeks to recognise publishers and individuals from around the world dedicated to creating picture books, as well as creating more opportunities for international exchange and cooperation among publishers, picture book authors and illustrators. Bijan and Manije is featured on a list of 180 published titles, from which the winners will be announced in December.
Bijan and Manije is an ancient tale from the Shahnameh, or Book of Kings, an epic poem by the 10th-century Persian poet Ferdowsi. A twist of fate brings Bijan face to face with the daughter of his enemy. They fall in love and refuse to abandon each other, even under duress. It’s up to Iran’s greatest knight, Rostam, to help save the day and bring the warring nations to peace.
The tale features the gorgeous artwork of Marjan Vafaian, who has also illustrated The Parrot and the Merchant and is the illustrator of the first in our upcoming One Story Many Voices title, Cinderella of the Nile, to be released in May 2018. For more information, see our Spring 2018 Catalogue.
It is retold by Ali Seidabadi, translated by Azita Rassi and rewritten in English by Nicolette Jones.
