The value of cross-generational relationships is clear

Check out this fantastic review of The Neighbourhood Surprise from Kate Heap over on Scope for Imagination! Have a read below.

The Neighbourhood Surprise is a lovely story of community, diversity, acceptance and love.

Mrs Fig is moving to a retirement home. Koya and her friends, Hassan and Alex, love to spend time with her and are really going to miss her when she leaves. They decide to plan a leaving party to celebrate her and make her feel special.

The value of cross-generational friendships is clear. The children hear stories of the past and learn so many skills like sewing, baking and caring for pets. The diversity of the community is also valued as everyone shares their recipes and culture.

Gentle illustrations portray a multi-cultural family of friends including those with disabilities and people who are not afraid to break traditional gender roles. Men are shown caring for young children and cooking delicious food.

The meaning of vegetarian and vegan diets are also explained and all the dishes are presented in an appetising manner. Inclusion is such an important aspect of this beautiful book.

There is joy in doing something nice for others. The Neighbourhood Surprise is sure to inspire young readers to do the same for those they love.
