Buy A Bottle of Happiness
Our bestselling title A Bottle of Happiness will be available in paperback from 15 January 2018! This beautiful fable-like tale of friendship, love and learning to share is written by Pippa Goodhart and illustrated by Ehsan Abdollahi – and has recently been nominated for the 2018 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal.
Pim is a child living in a poor village where everyone shares music, laughter and possessions. When Pim and dog Tiddle crosses the mountain to see what’s on the other side, they discover that the people living in the rich town there have much more to buy and sell, yet they seem to have less happiness. So Pim decides to see how the happiness of the poor village can be shared…
A Bottle of Happiness is the first in Tiny Owl’s series of intercultural collaborations, bringing together a UK author with an Iranian illustrator. Ehsan Abdollahi’s beautiful, unusual illustrations are what truly bring this book to life. The patterned clothing of the characters is inspired by the fabrics of southern Iran, where Ehsan grew up. Speaking about how he chose to differentiate the people of the two villages, Ehsan says, ‘Although the poorer people had less money, they were happy and they saw the world beautifully. So, I made their clothing beautiful but with more patches of fabric.’
And that’s the heart of the message of this story – that when we share happiness, music and laughter, differences like material wealth fade into insignificance.
