Buy The Parrot and the Merchant
I received the book the Parrot and the Merchant by Marjan Vafaian as a review copy from the publisher, Puffin and am thankful to them for the same. The book is an ancient fable by Rumi, retold for the modern reader with exquisitely patterned illustrations by acclaimed Iranian artist Marjan Vafaian.
Mah Jahan, a rich merchant woman, collects birds in cages. But when she brings back a gift for one of them, she learns a surprising lesson. This exquisitely illustrated story is an enchanting fable exploring how hard it is to let go of someone you love and give them freedom. Retold for modern-day readers, this classic tale by Rumi is brought to life by the award-winning illustrator Marjan Vafaian.
Mah Jahan, a Persian merchant, on her journeys far and wide, collects beautiful birds for herself and keeps them in chains so that they do not fly away and leave her. The beautiful bright parrot brought from India is her favourite as he had learnt to talk.
And then when she visits India next time, she asks her servants and her dear parrot what she should bring for them from India and the parrot asks for something unusual
The story is simple and teaches us the importance of feelings that even birds have. The language is simple and the illustrations are beautifully done. I loved the story and would recommend it to all parents to read to their young children.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book from the publisher, Puffin, in return for my honest review. I have NOT received any monetary compensation for the same.
